Southwark Council Specify Tobermore Anti-Shift Paving for £13m Camberwell Regeneration

Southwark Council launched plans for the £13 million regeneration of Camberwell town centre in 2012 and John McAslan & Partners was assigned the task of designing improvements for the library and plaza, the Green, pocket spaces and enhancements to the streetscape within the town. Tobermore helped meet the hard landscaping requirements of the project with the supply of City Pave VS5 – an interlocking block paving system that prevents pavement shifting and offers a striking finish.

The project was completed in July 2016 and the results are very impressive. The Library and plaza offer a larger facility for visitors with a children’s play area and an attractive outdoor space; the Green includes a new play area and a range of seating, reinforcing the role of the Green as a central meeting place for the community; and the pocket spaces and streetscape are now being used more effectively to enable Camberwell to function as a coherent town centre.

Southwark specified Tobermore’s City Pave VS5 in the colours of Silver, Mid Grey and Charcoal and the products were installed across Camberwell town by Blakedown Landscapes. City Pave VS5 is manufactured with shift protection on five sides of each block including a special profile on the bottom surface which produces a clawing effect in the pavement bed – this ensures continuous protection against pavement shifting and creates superior pavement stability.

City Pave VS5 is also manufactured with a granite aggregate surface layer that produces a modern finish, similar to the appearance of natural granite. As well as the aesthetic appeal, the hard wearing surface layer improves the overall strength and durability of the product.
