The design by Threesixty Architecture of this new self-storage facility for Shurgard UK Ltd included the installation of FIEGER louvres to both the South & West Elevations. The requirement was to provide the Fire Brigade with a means of clearing smoke from the access stairways in the event of an emergency.
Threesixty Architecture specified the FIEGER FLW 32 system, comprising insulated aluminium panel louvres,
configured in a continuous vertical run on the outside of the stairways.
To match the design colour scheme, the vents on the West Elevation were powder-coated to RAL 9006
White Aluminium, whilst those on the South Elevation were finished to RAL 9003 Signal White.
The louvres were supplied in sections to facilitate handling and installation on site, using the FIEGER “plug &
socket” frame system. Specific louvres were fixed closed to avoid clashing with internal structural steelwork.
The size of the vent runs vary from nearly 17 metres on the West Elevation to almost 8.5 metres on the
South.
The vents were fitted with hand lever controls as required by the Fire Brigade to enable them to control the
ventilation subject to prevailing conditions.
The use of insulated aluminium blades meant that an overall U-value of 1.90 W/m2 K was achieved, which with a Class 4 tested air leakage rate, provides a highly energy efficient feature of the construction.
The FLW 32 system has been tested in accordance with a range of European Standards, including EN 12101-2, EN 12207 & 12208, as well as BS 6180: 2011 Barriers in and about buildings.
