Save water in large scale, commercial and public sector buildings: Cistermiser launches Direct Flushing awareness campaign

Cistermiser, one of the UK’s leading providers of water and energy saving management solutions for commercial and public sector washrooms, has launched a new campaign to raise awareness of the benefits of Direct Flushing.

For facilities and building managers, adopting Direct Flushing can represent a major shift towards a more efficient, hygienic and cost-effective solution to water saving in washrooms, as it is ideally suited for today’s high-usage environments where water conservation and regulatory compliance are simply non-negotiable.

“With the UK facing a growing water crisis, where projections suggest that by 2050, nearly 5 billion extra litres of water will be needed daily1 to meet demand, something needs to be done. While a dripping tap can waste 5,500 litres2 a year; a leaking toilet can waste 400 litres3 a day. It is vital therefore, that water is managed and conserved effectively wherever possible – and Direct Flushing really works,” says Richard Braid, Cistermiser’s Managing Director.

“Our campaign is running through 2025 and will be a major focus for us across social media, our events and media engagement. Direct Flushing is part of the solution for efficient water usage in large scale, commercial and public sector spaces.”

Five reasons to move to Direct Flushing

1. Direct flushing systems connect directly to the mains water supply so there’s no need for a cistern, no standing water or risk of flooding. Instead, each flush draws directly from the mains, avoiding the build-up of harmful bacteria so washrooms remain safe and hygienic.

2. Gravity-fed cisterns often lack dynamic pressure which can lead to an incomplete flush. Direct flush systems solve this problem by using dynamic pressure to deliver an immediate and effective flush with no refill delay. Successive flushes are performed instantly, ensuring complete pan clearance, to maintain high hygiene standards.

3. In washrooms with high urinal usage, traditional auto-flush systems often lead to excessive water consumption, as urinals flush at set intervals regardless of use. Direct flush systems for urinals, like Cistermiser’s Direct Flush, solve this issue by only activating when necessary.

4. Cistermiser’s Easyflush Direct minimises maintenance requirements by being fully mains-powered and designed for longevity. This reduces the demand on facility staff but also offers substantial savings over time, particularly in water consumption. Compared to traditional WCs that often experience seal degradation and subsequent leaks, Easyflush Direct achieves attractive savings of up to 181,500 litres of water per year and has an impressive product payback of circa 8 months while saving £744.76 over 24 months while offsetting 0.062 tonnes of carbon.

5. Easyflush Direct includes a DC pipe interrupter, ensuring that stored water risks are mitigated and backflow protection is enhanced. The result is a system that complies with Fluid Category 5 requirements, meeting hygiene standards crucial for environments sensitive to cross-contamination.
