One East Devon District Council resident experienced first-hand the lifesaving protection that an LD1 category fire system provides

In November 2023, Orestone Controls, a specialist Fire & Security installer, visited the East Devon District Council Assisted Living Facility. During the initial visit to site for unrelated works, Orestone noticed that the 30 dwellings at the property mainly consisted of Category LD3 fire alarm systems. A LD3 system is the minimum level of fire protection that can be installed, covering only the areas that form escape routes, such as hallways and landings.

Orestone recommended upgrading to a LD1 System to ensure compliance with British Standards. As such, East Devon District Council took the proactive and responsible steps to commence works for an interconnected Aico LD1 System to be installed, viewing it as a long-term investment to protect the lives of their residents. Works were completed on upgrading this system in December 2023.

Just four months after the Aico’s Ei3016 Optical Smoke Alarm and Ei3014 Heat Alarm were installed, disaster struck. A fire broke out in one of the properties, engulfing every room and causing extensive damage. The featured images illustrate the harrowing damage caused by the fire.

Despite the awful damage caused by the blaze, the interconnected LD1 Fire Alarm System delivered an early warning and quick alert to the resident, providing those precious extra minutes to evacuate the property safely and contact the relevant authorities.

Ryan Mullen, Chief Commercial Officer at Orestone Controls said.

“It's eye-opening to receive photographs like these from a customer’s 2-bedroom flat where a fire recently broke out. These images starkly remind us of the importance of our job and the devastating impact a fire can have on a home and the lives within it. Thankfully, due to the early detection provided by an LD1 fire alarm system, the resident was alerted in time and managed to evacuate safely, potentially saving their life.”

Sue Hodges at East Devon District Council, expressed her gratitude.

“We are incredibly thankful for Orestone’s recommendations and fire safety knowledge. The installation of the LD1 detection system has made a significant difference, potentially saving the resident’s life during the recent fire. This experience underscores the importance of comprehensive fire detection systems in protecting our vulnerable residents.”

This unfortunate event reminds us of the pivotal role fire alarm systems play in resident safety, with an LD1 category system providing the highest form of protection, ultimately creating safer homes.
