The redevelopment of Newson’s Yard on Pimlico Road, in south-west London, has involved the re-working of the oldest timber yard in London into a modern commercial development. The project provides high quality retail on the ground floor and nine residential units on the upper floor.
A key challenge for the architects, Stiff + Trevillion, was to marry the original building features with the new design concept. A principal element of the design is the retention and refurbishment of the central rooflight, which creates a sense of light and space.
The contract for the ventilation system was won by DH Mechatronic UK Ltd (formerly Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd), who chose FIEGER FLW 40_17 SmoTec louvre vents to provide ventilation to the central atrium.
As well as enabling the release of hot air in summer, the FIEGER SmoTec vents are designed to be used in a fire emergency to maintain the escape ways by allowing smoke to be dispersed.
A key requirement of the project was the acoustic performance of the louvre vents to minimize sound break-out from the building.
A total of 24 louvre vents were supplied, each comprising 40mm deep insulated aluminium louvre blades with twin acoustic liners, rated at 43 dB Rw and 28 mm Class A1 mineral wool.
All of the units were finished in RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey polyester powder paint.
The vents were supplied complete with D+H 24V DC actuators fitted to the side-frames, which were connected into the fire detection system and BMS.
To facilitate installation, the vents were manufactured with integral 17 x 40mm thermally-broken glazing adapters.
In addition to its acoustic performance, the FIEGER vent achieves an impressive thermal performance with an overall U-value of 1.50 W/m2 K. Together with a tested low air leakage rate to Class 4 of EN 12207 the unit provides a highly energy efficient feature of the installation.
In addition to mandatory testing to EN 12101-2 for natural smoke vents, the FLW 40 vent is also tested to BS 6180: 2011 for barrier loading and achieved Class 8A for watertightness under EN 12208.
