Levolux Glass Louvres Give Light and Air to White Hart Lane

The redevelopment of White Hart Lane Station directly supports the regeneration in the area, which includes plans for the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium, a museum, hotel and 585 new homes, as well as 2,000 homes as part of the High Road West masterplan and a further 3,000 homes in the wider North Tottenham area.

As part of the redevelopment London Overground have created a new station entrance and a new ticket hall south of the current station building. It will allow for improved passenger flows by providing step-free access to the centre of the platforms as well as creating an opportunity for community activity within the area.

The new station is designed to make a statement in the area and create a modern appearance with a nod to the history of the area by using terracotta shades incorporated into the façade design.

Levolux were engaged early in the design process by the design team to assist with the design development of certain elements of the facade which incorporated a bespoke glass louvre system along with a look-a-like terracotta pot which was manufactured from cast aluminium with an added touch by using rough texture powder coating.

Working alongside Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects Levolux developed a glass louvre system which provided both shelter from the elements and air flow into the ticket hall area along with screening on the platform elevation with an opaque glass.

The glass louvres comprise a bespoke designed aluminium shoe which clamps the glass at each end of the 2.8m span and fits to an aluminium extruded frame which gives the glass louvres a picture frame to each of the openings.

The glass was engineered to a thickness of 21.5mm and at 700mm wide each separate louvre overlaps the one below to allow the flow air through the station and also provide a level of weather protection.

Due to the nature of the building stringent testing and proving was required of the glass to ensure its suitability which was all carried out and passed with flying colours.

The bespoke design enabled Levolux to install to the tight time frames dictated by London Overground projects as a large amount of the assembly took place off site so that the final elements could then be incorporated once delivered on site.

With the ‘just in time’ deliveries taking place from Levolux’s dedicated assembly facility the frames, with assembled clamps and glass could be brought onto site as and when needed as this allowed for materials to be installed in a timely manner and also minimise space required on site.

With Levolux works now complete Taylor Woodrow are adding the final touches to the station which is due to open shortly and will no doubt be stunning addition to the redevelopment of the area.
