Case Study: Glen & Millbrae Courts – Coatbridge

As part of North Lanarkshire Council’s re-provisioning programme, both Glen and Millbrae residential tower blocks have been refurbished, including major improvements to the safety standards.

In addition to new windows, lighting and cladding, Engie Regeneration engaged smoke control specialist, Car Park Systems Ltd, to carry out improvements to the smoke ventilation system.

Working in close co-operation with Car Park Systems Ltd on the design approach, FIEGER supplied FLW 32 SmoTec louvre vents to provide emergency smoke release at the end of each corridor.

A total of 56 louvre vents were supplied, each comprising 32mm double-glazed louvre blades and an integral fixed double-glazed bottom panel, using toughened heat-soak tested glass outside and laminated inside. Each vent comprises 6 no. opening louvres, which provide the 1.5 m2 geometric free area required by The Scottish Building Regulations.

All of the units were finished in RAL 9010 Pure White polyester powder paint and were supplied complete with stainless steel crossbars for additional safety.

The vents were supplied complete with D+H 24V DC actuators fitted to the side-frames, which were connected into the fire detection system. These were programmed for anti-trapping as a safety feature.

To facilitate installation, the vents were manufactured with bespoke pre-drilled Z-section fixing adapters.
All FIEGER products are tested to a range of European Standards, including EN 12101-2 for natural smoke vents, as well as to BS 6180: 2011 for barrier-loading.

An overall U-value of 1.90 W/m2 K was achieved, which with a Class 4 rating in accordance with EN 12207, provides a highly energy efficient feature of the refurbishment.
