Bespoke Rooflights Bring Light to House on the Heath

The Project

Clients Katherine & James contacted Cox Architects at the height of the pandemic in 2020 when they were thinking of buying a larger house in a leafy south-London suburb which could offer them more space and a generous rear garden.

Bringing the Outside In

The only problem was that the garden was north facing and, as light-loving New Zealanders, they were worried that the house would be too dark.

Cox were able to reassure them that with the right design they could ensure lots of natural light to the interior whilst improving the visual connection between house and garden.

Budget dictated a facelift of the existing structure rather than a rebuild so the design is a sort stage-set behind which a lot of the original building still sits.

Light, Bright, Open Plan Living

Cox Architects and builders Elson Properties approached Stella to commission three bespoke rooflights, which would transform the renovation and flood the new open plan living space with natural daylight.

A Bespoke Rooflight Solution

The main rooflight was of a large fixed design, measuring 5641mm(w) x 2022mm(h) consisting 4 glazing bars and 5 high performance double glazed units. A second fixed rooflight measured 2311mm(w) x 2022mm(h) and third manually opening rooflight sized 1226mm (w) x 2022mm (h).

All 3 rooflights were manufactured with a 316L stainless steel frame, and a high performance marine grade powder coat finish. The glass units consisted of a 6mm toughened SGG BioClean Natura glass with a self-clean & solar control outer pane, a 16mm black warm edge spacer filled with argon gas and a 6mm toughened Planitherm one inner pane.

American Ash liners completed the stunning internal appearance, complementing the sleek, classy finish throughout the rest of the property.
