8 First Street is the initial phase of a 2 million square feet development in this part of Manchester, located between the Creative Hub and the University of Manchester.
The bold & imaginative design by Fletcher Priest Architects sets a new standard for 21st Century working, with flexible work spaces, as well as cafes, restaurants & a gym. The building, which achieved BREEAM Excellent, features double height winter gardens, for which Fletcher Priest specified Fieger FLM louvres.
Apart from the aesthetic effect, using glazed louvres to the winter gardens provides a degree of protection against adverse weather, as well as enabling the release of hot air during summer.
Although not a specific requirement, the vents could be used to maintain clear escape ways in an emergency by allowing smoke to be dispersed. The FLM model has been tested to EN 12101-2.
The Fieger FLM single-glazed louvre vents comprise 12.76 laminated glass blades and a fixed louvre, barrier load tested to BS 6180: 2011.
Directly beneath the fixed blade, set at 1100mm from floor level, are three controllable louvres, all of which are limited to a 100mm opening gap, in accordance with Approved Document K.
A total of 16 louvre windows were supplied, extending to heights of 6.8 and 7.9 metres. The arrangement of the vents was tailored to meet the Fletcher Priest requirement to create an unbroken louvre appearance over the double height section.
The vent framework was powder coated to RAL 9004 Signal Black to give a matt finish matching the surrounding curtain walling.
