Swindon Station is back on track with UltraScape's Mortar Paving System

UltraScape's BS 7533 compliant mortar paving system has been used to deliver a modern and stylish forecourt outside Swindon railway station.

The redevelopment has transformed what was previously a heavy traffic dominated area, into a prestigious pedestrian focused arrival space which features seating, planting, lighting and a millennium clock. Taxi ranks, drop offs and bus stops are now in well defined locations.

Work was carried out by specialist civil engineering contractor, Britannia Construction and included the installation of 500 tonnes of high quality natural granite and Pennant Sandstone using UltraScape's Pro-Bed HS fine bedding concrete, Flowpoint rapid setting grout and Pro-Prime slurry primer.

Construction took place in 'live' conditions with train commuters still using the area to access the station. Flowpoint was the ideal choice as its rapid setting properties enable areas to be open to foot traffic in just 1 hour, keeping downtime and disruption to a minimum. Simple to use, requiring only the addition of water on site, it is poured over the area and washed clean, filling all joints evenly, without staining. This slurry method provides an easy method of grouting large areas, quickly.

UltraScape Pro-Bed HS provided a perfect bound base for the granite and stone setts. It can be laid up to 75mm in one pass, with greater depths achievable using successive layers. To promote bond, the supporting layer and setts were primed using UltraScape's Pro-Prime which ensures full and even contact will be made with the aggregate particles as well as promoting adhesion to greater than 2N/mm² as per the requirements of BS 7533.

Flowpoint and Pro-Bed HS are also available in 'ECO' which is ideal for use on schemes looking to achieve distinctive environmental performance in their work and recognition from the CEEQUAL award scheme.

Projects incorporating BS 7533 compliant materials benefit from a reduction in failures and considerable whole life cost savings. The materials have been independently and rigorously tested by a UKAS accredited laboratory to assess their performance capabilities. This method removes the uncertainty of site batched mortars and offers a minimum construction life of 40 years.

More than 3 million people pass through Swindon's station every year and UltraScape's BS 7533 compliant system was the ideal choice to ensure longevity and assure against costly repercussions.
