Galvanizing - the sustainable solution
Galvanizing has long been recognised as the most sustainable finishing process available to help the protect steel against corrosion.
Steel is a vital material in the construction, from major building projects, right through to gates and railings. But steel is highly prone to corrosion – it’s estimated that worldwide, one tonne of steel turns to rust every 90 seconds, which means that for every two tonnes of new steel produced, one is made to simply replace rust.
With sustainability becoming an ever-increasing factor for architects, developers and their clients it is no surprise that they continue to turn to hot-dip galvanizing as a highly-effective environmentally-friendly finish.
The process of galvanizing protects steel by dipping it into molten zinc at temperatures up to 450˚C, where a metallurgical reaction between the iron and the zinc forms a series of zinc-iron alloy layers. This corrosion protection can last up to 60 years depending on the environment it is used, without the need for any resource-intensive maintenance.
With its long life-span, cost-efficient savings and sustainable qualities, the claim that hot-dip galvanizing is one of, if not the, most environmentally-friendly finish available to the construction industry cannot easily be disputed.
Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, they offer a truly national galvanizing service.
